Talking About Cholesterol

Cholesterol is an essential part of our bodies. It is, in fact, found in every cell of man and animal. It is a fatty, wax-like substance and belongs to the lipid family.

Cholesterol is, in fact, the substance that helps make up our cell walls. It is waxy because otherwise the blood would wash our cells away -- and, wow! Where would we be then? Puddles on the floor? You know, I am very glad I have some cholesterol in my body!

Cholesterol is associated with the formation of bile to help with digestion. It is used in the formation of Vitamin D in the body, also for brain function, and hormone production. Aren't you glad you have some cholesterol in your body? Yes. But here is also where the problem begins.

Our bodies normally make all the cholesterol they need. When we eat extra cholesterol we run the risk of over-supply. Some people also have a genetic factor in which the body itself makes too much cholesterol.

I want you to imagine you have in front of you four containers. The first has lard or dripping, the second coconut oil, the third cod liver oil, and the fourth vegetable oil.

Now, which ones contain cholesterol? That's right -- the dripping and the cod liver oil. The coconut oil and the vegetable oil have no cholesterol.

Here is a rule with no exceptions --

If it comes from an animal, it will contain cholesterol;

If it comes from a plant, there is no cholesterol.

AvocadoSimple, isn't it? Now, what about a fatty fruit, like avocado? Remember the rule? Yes, it comes from a plant, and so, although it contains fat, there is no cholesterol.
